What “Made-to-Order” Actually Means (And Why I Don’t Keep Inventory)

What “Made-to-Order” Actually Means (And Why I Don’t Keep Inventory)

If you’ve ever placed an order with Bear & Roo, you may have noticed something a little different.

Your order isn’t pulled from a shelf.

It isn’t sitting in a warehouse waiting to ship.

In fact, when you place an order… the piece you ordered probably doesn’t exist yet.

And that’s completely intentional.

Why Most Clothing Brands Keep Inventory

Most clothing companies produce large batches of clothing months before customers ever see them.

They guess what sizes will sell.

They guess what colours people will like.

They guess how many pieces they need.

Then those items sit in warehouses waiting to be purchased.

If the guess is wrong, those pieces often end up discounted, cleared out, or worse — wasted.

That system works for large brands that produce thousands of identical pieces.

But it doesn’t work for what I believe clothing should be.

The Problem With “Standard” Sizing

Most clothing is made using an “average” body measurement.

But here’s the reality:

Most women aren’t average.

Some need a shorter inseam.

Some need more room through the hips.

Some want a higher rise.

Some prefer a more relaxed fit.

When clothing is mass-produced in advance, those adjustments simply aren’t possible.

You’re expected to fit the clothing.

Instead of the clothing fitting you.

How Made-to-Order Works at Bear & Roo

Every piece I make is cut after your order is placed.

That means I’m not pulling your leggings, joggers, or hoodie from a shelf.

I’m cutting your fabric specifically for you.

This allows me to offer things most big brands can’t:

• Custom inseams

• Size-inclusive options

• Made-for-you adjustments

• Better fabric choices

• Individual attention to each garment

Each piece is sewn one at a time in my studio.

No production lines.

No warehouse racks.

Just thoughtful, slow production.

Why Made-to-Order Improves Fit

Because your piece is being made for you, I can focus on details that matter.

Waistbands that sit comfortably.

Inseams that match your height.

Fits that work with real bodies.

Instead of forcing you into a standard size, made-to-order clothing allows the garment to adapt to you.

That’s the biggest reason so many women tell me they struggle to go back to regular store-bought clothing after trying it.

Why Made-to-Order Reduces Waste

One of the biggest problems in fashion is overproduction.

Millions of garments are produced every year that never get worn.

When clothing is made to order, that doesn’t happen.

Fabric is purchased intentionally.

Pieces are cut with purpose.

Every garment has a home before it’s even made.

It’s slower, yes.

But it’s also more responsible.

Why Some Items Are Pre-Orders Instead of Stock

You’ll occasionally see fabrics available as pre-orders.

This simply means I order the fabric based on what customers actually want instead of guessing.

Only the pieces that are ordered get produced.

This allows me to offer fun prints and premium fabrics without overproducing.

Why I’ll Never Keep Inventory

Keeping inventory might mean faster shipping.

But it would also mean guessing what women need, producing pieces that might never be worn, and losing the ability to customize the fit.

That’s not the kind of brand I want to run.

I started Bear & Roo to create clothing that works for real bodies and real lives.

Made-to-order is the best way I know how to do that.

The Real Benefit for You

When you place an order, you’re not buying something sitting on a shelf.

You’re ordering something that will be made specifically for you.

And in a world full of fast fashion and disposable clothing…

I think that still matters.
